“I’m Bart Simpson. Who the hell are you?”
With those timeless words Nancy greeted an audience of nearly 400 on the evening of September 13th at Duke University’s Baldwin Auditorium. And just a few nights later, on September 25th, she used the same immortal phrase to greet an audience that exceeded 1000 at William Rainey Harper College in Palatine, Illinois.
Both presentations kicked off with a new compilation of animated scenes depicting Nancy’s extraordinary career as a voice artist. This fast-paced perspective includes such classics as Pound Puppies, Richie Rich, The Animatics ultimately arriving at Nancy’s current fare – featuring Chuckie from the Rugrats and Rufus from Kim Possible, not to mention Ralph, Nelson and, of course, Bart, from The Simpsons.
Following the clips Nancy seamlessly flipped from one voice to another as she shared some fan favorites from Springfield. She then detailed the humorous, and sometimes sad story, about her beginnings that lead up to the wonderful day she was hired on-the-spot as the infamous “underachiever.”
Nancy auditioned to play Bart for the original interstitials on “The Tracey Ullman Show.” As Nancy recalled that audition, her voice morphed into the Bart we know and love. “Typically, I give a director two or three options when I go in for an audition,” she said. “But for some reason, the character description of Bart was so specific, ‘This is the voice, man. Hey, what’s happening, man?’
She followed this tale with some delightful behind-the-scenes anecdotes about celebrities who have graced The Simpsons, including Mel Gibson and Meryl Streep, and the show closed with a halarious video, “The Day in the Life of a Voice Actor,” a mini-documentary that follows Nancy through a “typical” busy day.
Just as we see in the video, Nancy is still the anonymous star. Each campus has tens of thousands of students but even after sixteen years playing Bart, she is still amazed to discover that she “…can walk around a campus all day, and not one person will stop me,”
