The Kids Are the Real Winners!

PALS Teen Council Graduation – 5. May, 2010

One of my fabulous volunteers of Happy House, Carol Loweree, and I have been working with the Teen Council of the Police Activities League local youth center in the Devonshire District of my neighborhood.  Seven of the kids recently completed the entire 21-chapters of the Good Choices program that presents simple concepts for making better decisions in their lives.  From “Setting a Good Example” to “Respect the Religious Beliefs of Others” to “Be Faithful” and “Flourish and Prosper”, the program not only helps the teens to understand the differences between right and wrong, but also provides practical application so they can demonstrate their understanding.

We are very proud to present this graduating class to the PALS Board of Directors, who supports this program as one of the many programs offered at the youth center.

DEVONSHIRE PALS AWARDS – 10. December, 2009

On December 9th, Lorraine New, President of the Devonshire Pals in Northridge, CA, presided once again over the PALS annual awards ceremony but for the first time in their new home, the Grieg Smith Devonshire PALS Youth Center.

The doors to the new youth center have only been open for just over one month but are already seeing more and more children come through the doors to participate in the many after-school program. (more…)

PALS Youth Center Open for Business – 31. October, 2009

On Sunday, October 25, a dream became reality with the opening of the Greig Smith LAPD Devonshire Youth Center in Northridge. The much awaited 5,500 square foot facility was introduced to the community by PALS President Lorraine New, Councilman Greig Smith, LAPD Deputy Chief Michael Moore, campaign co-chair Greg Baker, North Valley Honorary Mayor Nancy Cartwright and other local dignitaries and officials.

LAPD Devonshire PALS (Police Activities League Supporters) has spent five years raising the necessary funds to build a center dedicated to the community’s youth.  Mayor Villaraigosa donated $1 million on behalf of the city; Nancy Cartwright’s annual Monte Carlo nights helped to raise funds as well as donations from the community’s businesses and individuals that helped to complete the project.

Instead of operating out of one room as they have been doing, PALS can now accommodate hundreds of young people monthly. Kids of all ages can take advantage of and enjoy after-school programs from sports to computer training, reading, tutoring, arts and numerous other activities.

The center has already been the site for local youth to enjoy Halloween and it will serve as a hub for educational, entertaining and fun activities for the children of the region, providing a safe and productive haven after school and on weekends and holidays.

4th Annual Monte Carlo Night to Benefit Pals Is Another Huge Success at the House that “Bart” Built – 14. October, 2009

The 4th Annual Monte Carlo Night took place on October 3 with a Denim & Diamonds theme. It seems this party gets better every year!!  Every one of the people in attendance – numbering over 500! — had a blast.  Nancy, dressed in elegant cowgirl regalia, once again opened her Northridge home to raise additional funds for PALS (Police Activities League Supporters) to purchase materials needed and for the various programs for the Councilman Greig Smith LAPD Devonshire PALS Youth Center, named after the local councilman who has been so supportive in the efforts of PALS and other organizations. The money raised over the past few years has helped to build a brand new 5500 square feet youth center which will proudly open November 2, 2009. The Center is targeted to provide after school activities and motivational opportunities for potentially “at risk” youth. (more…)
